Ofcom update - BT ducts open for business !

25th February 2016

With the Ofcom update on its review of Digital commuications, it clarified the use of BT duct and poles for direct access for operators with their own exchange or PoP assets. What this means is the existing BT fibre ducts can be used for Ultra high speed fibre services directly to consumer and business premises.

What does this mean for NextGen ?, it just clarifies that we are able to provide direct fibre services into businesses and consumers using our own subduct using our own contractors from our existing cabinet network. This means we have 688,733 premises passed for both copper and fibre services with our existing exchange cabinet footprint.

Can anyone do this? the criteria for the duct sharing is still unchanged and this requires a powered street cabinet with a meet me chamber connected to the BT network. The costs to provide this are in the region of £30-50k and are subject to planning, making existing city centre cabinets very valuable assets i.e. the council are unlikely to agree to a large section of street being dug up.
