Public Cloud   You are here: Home » Cloud » Public Cloud

Overview

The public cloud allows organisations to benefit from services that are provided in a virtualised environment, constructed using shared physical resources and infrastructure and accessible via the public internet.

Software as a Service (SaaS) applications such as cloud storage, CRM and online office apps e.g. Microsoft 365 are the most familiar. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings are also now widely available such as cloud based web hosting and development environments.

The public cloud can be used by organisations to reduce costs and improve efficiencies for non-sensitive applications and data such as online document collaboration and webmail.

Advantages of the Public Cloud are:

  • Scalability – the public cloud has vast pools of resources that can be made available on demand.
  • Costs – public cloud resources share centralised operations and management and are therefore very cost effective often operating on a pay-as-you-go model.
  • Reliability – the numbers of servers and resources available in the public cloud means that if any component fails the cloud service should still run affected on the remaining components
  • Flexibility – there’s a huge range of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS applications and services available that can be easily accessed from any internet enabled device.
